La Jolla Hair Salon Tips for Blow Dry Styling

 blow dryer and styling tools

Blow dryers are probably the most widely used heat styling tool.  They can be a lifesaver when you are in a hurry, but if used incorrectly, they can dry and even damage your hair.  Follow these tips from our La Jolla hair salon for using your dryer effectively and for protecting your hair against heat damage.

1.  First towel dry and detangle your hair.  For curly hair types, fingers can be the best option for detangling while other hair types can benefit from careful brushing with a good quality natural bristle brush such as a boar's hair brush. After detangling, prepare your hair by separating it into sections to make it easier for blow dry styling.

2.  Smoothing serums and heat protectant sprays can help reduce frizz and protect the hair from heat damage while styling.  These products are great to use before blow drying so that the hair cuticle can adequately absorb the product.  If your desired end result is a super straight blowout, then you can try a straightening cream or glaze that will temporarily give you a straighter look.  To enhance or define curls, use a mousse or gel product before blow drying.

3.  Choose a low temperature warm setting or a cool setting on your dryer and blow dry hair from the top down.  Directing the stream of air in a downward direction will help create a smoother style.  Also avoid using the dryer at full speed.  Large blasts of air at high temperatures can end up damaging your hair, leaving it dry and void of its beautiful natural shine. This can also result in frizzy hair.  For best results, use a medium speed at low temperature and hold the dryer at least 6 inches from your head gently moving it to avoid concentrating the heat in one section for too long.

4.  Though blow dryers give us the ability to be on the go in a shorter amount of time, the best option for maintaining the health of your hair is to let it air dry as often as you can.  Whenever possible, take a break from the dryer and allow your hair to air dry.  Even allowing it to partially air dry before using the dryer can make a difference in the health and beauty of your hair.
